Dunn, NC (February 5, 2023) - As reported in the local news, a mother and her 9-year-old daughter were injured on Sunday when a Range Rover SUV being pursued by Harnett County Sheriff's deputies crashed into their vehicle at Clinton Ave. and Cumberland St. in Dunn, North Carolina on Sunday February 5, 2023.
The jaws of life were used to extract the victims from the car. Narcotics agents with the Harnett County Sheriff's Office seized 3 kilograms of cocaine from the Range Rover, which was driven by Simoneka Lashay Neal of Homestead, Florida.
According to Sheriff Wayne Coats, the incident began with a traffic stop for an unsafe movement and escalated into a chase, crash with injuries, significant property damage, and seizure of a large amount of cocaine. The driver, Simoneka Lashay Neal, was charged with three counts of trafficking cocaine and one count each of maintaining a vehicle for a controlled substance, speeding to elude arrest with a motor vehicle, and unsafe movement. She was held in the Harnett County Detention Center under a $1,500,000 secured bond.
"While deputies were speaking to the driver she drove off and deputies pursued the vehicle. During the pursuit, the driver ran a red light at the intersection of Clinton Avenue and Cumberland Street crashing into a car with a mother and child occupying that vehicle." said Sheriff Wayne Coats. "After the initial crash, the suspect's vehicle struck a power pole before crashing near a church."
"The woman and child were transported to the hospital and were discharged a short time later on February 5th." Coats stated. "After searching the suspect's car, deputies found 3 kilograms of cocaine with a tax value of $600,000."
The mother and child were transported to Betsy Johnson Hospital and were later discharged. Trooper J. Foushee with the N.C. State Highway Patrol is investigating the crash.
