Rocky Mount, NC (September 05, 2026) - According to local reports and statements from the North Carolina State Highway Patrol, a woman died in a hit-and-run collision on Old Wilson Road near Sutton Road in Edgecombe County. The crash occurred just outside Rocky Mount at approximately 8:17 p.m. Saturday.

Troopers identified the woman as Simone Wynder, 36, of La Grange. Reports indicated that she was walking with her young child, who was not injured. First Sgt. K. Howald said investigators suspected Wynder experienced a medical episode and fell partially into the roadway before the collision. That possibility remained part of the investigation.

Authorities said Steven Williams, 67, of Princeville, was traveling south on Old Wilson Road in a 2004 Chevrolet pickup truck when the vehicle struck Wynder. Troopers said Williams continued driving after the collision. Investigators reported that three witnesses observed the crash.

Flock cameras helped investigators locate Williams and the truck. According to troopers, Williams said he believed he had struck a pothole and did not realize he had hit a person. Investigators reported finding no damage to the truck, which they considered consistent with their assessment that Wynder was likely on the ground when she was struck.

Old Wilson Road was closed at Sutton Road following the crash, according to state transportation officials. The road later reopened.

Initial reports did not identify an arrest. Subsequent reporting confirmed that Williams was charged with misdemeanor hit-and-run. Troopers said the investigation remained ongoing and that they would consult the district attorney’s office about whether additional charges were appropriate, according to a local report.
