Leland, NC (July 08, 2026) - According to information from local reports, police, and school officials, a Cumberland County Schools activity bus carrying members of the Douglas Byrd High School football team overturned shortly after 11:30 a.m. at the interchange of U.S.-17 North and U.S.-74 West in Leland.

The team was returning to Fayetteville after participating in a seven-on-seven football event at South Brunswick High School. Most reports stated that 33 people were on the bus, including 26 students and seven adults. One later report cited 23 students and seven staff members.
