Morganton, NC (May 15, 2024) - According to local news sources, Brittany Elizabeth Ferguson, a 23-year-old woman from Morganton, North Carolina, was tragically killed by a rock thrown through her windshield while driving in Burke County on Wednesday night.

The incident occurred around 8:40 p.m. on Conley Road. Ferguson was driving her 2006 Ford Taurus when a 5- to 8-pound rock was thrown through the windshield, striking her in the head. The impact caused Ferguson to lose control of her vehicle, veer off the road, and crash into a house. She was pronounced dead at the scene due to the head injury.

Witnesses reported seeing a white Chevrolet S-10 single-cab truck with a white male riding in the truck bed driving back and forth in the area around the time of the incident. The North Carolina Highway Patrol is investigating and working with local sheriff's deputies to identify the truck and its occupants. They are also canvassing the area for any surveillance footage that might provide additional clues.

The tragic event has left the community in shock and mourning. Ferguson's family and friends have placed signs along the roadway where the incident occurred, seeking information from the public. Loved ones have expressed their grief and called for justice for Brittany. Her godmother wrote on Facebook, "My heart is broken. I love you baby girl and you will be missed so much. You have always been like one of my own. It just doesn’t seem real that you’re gone."

State troopers are urging anyone with information about the white Chevrolet S-10 or the incident to contact the Highway Patrol at 828-466-5500. As of May 17, there have been no updates on the investigation.
