Fayetteville, NC (February 20, 2026) - Local news outlets report that a late night crash at the intersection of Ramsey Street and Fernwood Drive left a 25-year-old motorcyclist dead and resulted in multiple felony charges against a Cameron man.
According to police, officers responded around 10:15 p.m. on Friday to a collision involving a 2025 Honda CB750 motorcycle and a 2013 Nissan Altima. Investigators determined that Ean Alexander Gaskins, 25, of Fayetteville, was traveling south on Ramsey Street with a green light when the Nissan, traveling north, turned left onto Fernwood Drive directly into his path. The vehicles collided within the intersection.
First responders pronounced Gaskins dead at the scene. Authorities notified his next of kin shortly afterward.
Police said the Nissan Altima left the scene following the impact. The vehicle was later located abandoned approximately one quarter mile from the crash site. After an investigation and search, officers identified Roberto Coton Jr., 43, of Cameron, as the suspected driver. He was taken into custody late Saturday morning.
Coton has been charged with felony death by motor vehicle, felony hit and run, driving under the influence, failure to yield, operating a vehicle with no insurance, expired registration, and expired inspection. He is being held at the Cumberland County Detention Center under a $675,000 secured bond. The investigation remains ongoing.
How Civil Considerations May Develop After A Fatal Intersection Crash
Incidents like this are often reviewed through several legal and procedural lenses once the immediate emergency response concludes. In North Carolina, criminal charges and civil liability are evaluated separately, and each process follows its own standards and timelines.
In serious motorcycle accidents, investigators may rely on traffic signal data, vehicle damage analysis, witness accounts, and roadway measurements to better understand how the collision occurred. As additional facts come to light, insurance carriers and involved parties may reassess their positions, and questions surrounding financial responsibility can evolve accordingly.
Protecting Your Legal Rights After A Motorcycle Accident In North Carolina
After a significant motorcycle accident, protecting legal rights often begins with careful documentation and a clear understanding of available options. Even when fault appears straightforward, insurance reviews can take time, and statements or paperwork completed too quickly may have lasting consequences.
Medical expenses are only one part of a potential claim. Lost income, future treatment needs, and non economic impacts such as pain and reduced mobility may also factor into how a case is evaluated. Reviewing documents carefully before signing and maintaining organized records can help preserve long term interests.
Key considerations in many motorcycle accident claims include:
- Responding promptly to insurer communications while keeping copies of all correspondence.
- Preserving photos, repair estimates, and digital evidence from the scene.
- Tracking medical visits, prescriptions, and related out of pocket costs.
- Monitoring deadlines that could affect filing requirements under state law.
