Lenoir, NC (April 21, 2023) - Local news outlets report that two women were killed, and four children were injured in a head-on collision in Lenoir on Friday.

The accident occurred around 4 p.m. on US 64 near Beecher Anderson Road, when a Chevrolet Astro, driven by Deanna Lynn Ross, 41, of Lenoir, crossed the center line and collided head-on with an Oldsmobile Silhouette driven by Reyna Mendoza, 29, from Valdese. According to the North Carolina State Highway Patrol, Ross was not wearing a seatbelt during the crash and later died at Caldwell Memorial Hospital.

Mendoza, who was also taken to Caldwell Memorial Hospital, succumbed to her injuries as well. The four boys in Mendoza's vehicle, aged between one and 13, were transported to different hospitals in the area with varying injuries. Two of the children were still in the hospital as of Monday, with the one-year-old requiring surgery.

Family member Virginia Barreno expressed her grief, saying, “It’s hard for the family because of the kids, of course. We need to pray for all of the family, for the kids and the husband.” Students in Burke County gathered around a flagpole on Monday morning to pray for the family, and extra counselors were available at two of the schools the boys attended.

Nancy Hasty, a former teacher of the children, recounted her shock: “It was just shocking and unbelievable. I sent a note saying, ‘This can’t be our Reyna,’ and yes, it was our Reyna.” Hasty has witnessed the outpouring of love from the community to help the children and their father.

Following the accident, US 64 was closed for over an hour as troopers investigated the scene. The North Carolina State Highway Patrol is continuing to look into the incident.

What to Look for in a Personal Injury Attorney in North Carolina?

Selecting the right personal injury attorney is crucial to ensuring that your rights are protected and that you receive fair compensation for your injuries. Here are some key factors to consider when choosing a personal injury attorney in North Carolina:

Experience and Focus

It's essential to select an attorney who has extensive experience in handling personal injury cases. They should have a strong focus on personal injury law and be knowledgeable about the specific laws and regulations in North Carolina. Look for an attorney who has handled cases similar to yours and has a track record of success.

Reputation and Reviews

A good personal injury attorney should have a strong reputation in the community and among their peers. Research the attorney's background and look for reviews from former clients. Positive testimonials and recommendations can give you an idea of the attorney's success rate and how they treat their clients.

Communication and Accessibility

Effective communication is essential when working with a personal injury attorney. Choose an attorney who is responsive to your inquiries, keeps you informed about the progress of your case, and is accessible when you need them. They should be willing to take the time to explain complex legal matters and provide clear guidance throughout the process.

Contingency Fee Arrangement

Most personal injury attorneys in North Carolina work on a contingency fee basis, meaning they only receive payment if they win your case. This arrangement ensures that your attorney is motivated to obtain the best possible outcome for your case. Make sure to discuss the fee structure and any additional costs upfront to avoid any surprises later on.

Resources and Network

A successful personal injury attorney should have the necessary resources and network to build a strong case on your behalf. This includes access to medical experts, investigators, and other professionals who can help gather evidence and strengthen your claim.

Compassion and Understanding

Dealing with a personal injury can be a traumatic and emotional experience. Choose an attorney who demonstrates compassion and understanding for your situation. They should be sympathetic to your needs, and be prepared to fight for your rights and interests.

Willingness to Go to Trial

While many personal injury cases are settled out of court, it's crucial to choose an attorney who is not afraid to take your case to trial if necessary. This can help ensure that you receive the maximum compensation possible for your injuries.

When looking for a personal injury attorney in North Carolina, consider factors such as experience, reputation, communication, fee structure, resources, compassion, and willingness to go to trial. By selecting an attorney who meets these criteria, you can increase your chances of obtaining a favorable outcome in your personal injury case.
