Lenoir, NC (January 26, 2023) - As reported in the local news a U.S. Postal Service worker was severely injured in a dog attack in Lenoir, North Carolina on Thursday shortly before 2pm. Kristi Reinheardt Goldsberry, 47, was delivering a package along Norwood Street off US 321 when two Great Danes pushed past the homeowner and attacked her. The worker sustained a severe injury to her right forearm and had puncture wounds in her back and right leg.

The attack took place on the owner's property at 956 SW Norwood St. and the 130 pound dogs were initially inside the home when the mail carrier approached the front door. The owner was able to get control of both dogs and render first aid to the worker. The owner told the police that the dogs were four years old and have never bitten anyone before.

"This was not a provoked attack. She wasn’t doing anything out of the ordinary. She was just delivering the mail," says Caldwell County Animal Care Enforcement Director Richard Gilliland.

Goldsberry was first taken to nearby Caldwell UNC Healthcare hospital and then airlifted to Atrium Health Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte after suffering severe injuries. Both dogs were up to date on their rabies vaccinations and are now under quarantine. The owner surrendered the dogs to Caldwell County Animal Care Enforcement at the animal center. According to police, it is unlikely that any charges will be filed.

"The safety of our employees and customers is our top priority." says Philip Bogenberger a spokesperson for the USPS. "We ask customers to keep their dogs secure to ensure carriers can safely deliver the mail. If it’s necessary to open the door, make sure dogs are secured in a separate room."

Neighbors who have seen the dogs in the fenced backyard where warning signs are posted have stated that they never had any issues with the Great Danes. Neighbor Glenn Herman said "I’ve been out and walked over there and reached through the fence and petted the dogs. I mean, they weren’t vicious to me."

Mail carrier Rachel Duncan has expressed the precautions she takes with canines on her route, "When I pull in a driveway, I blow the horn and try to make all kinds of noise or distractions to see if there are any dogs that may come out."

Animal Care Services is working closely with the Lenoir Police Department to investigate the attack. Due to the nature of the attack, the dogs will not be adopted.

No criminal charges are expected at this time.
