Southern Pines, NC (June 6, 2024) - Local news outlets report a serious T-bone collision involving a Volkswagen Jetta and a Chevrolet Malibu at the intersection of Central Drive and Fairway Drive. The accident occurred around 10 p.m. Thursday, resulting in severe injuries for the occupants of the Jetta.

According to officials, the Volkswagen Jetta, which was traveling on Fairway Drive, failed to stop at a stop sign and crossed into the path of a Chevrolet Malibu traveling on Central Drive toward the Moore County Airport. The Malibu struck the Jetta on the driver's side, pushing it off the road and into a group of trees.

Emergency units were dispatched to the scene, and firefighters had to pry open the driver’s side doors of the Jetta to remove the occupants. All three individuals in the Jetta were transported to Moore Regional Hospital as air care was unavailable due to weather conditions. Pinecrest High School student Brycen Mabe, who was initially placed on life support, tragically succumbed to his injuries yesterday at UNC Medical Center.

Brycen Mabe, a high school football player in North Carolina for Pinecrest High School, was a beloved member of his community. His head football coach, Nick Eddins, shared heartfelt words about Brycen: “Brycen was a very, very great young man; he did everything we asked him to do. You only had to ask him one time, and he would do it. It was an honor to be able to say that I was his coach. He was very intense and tough-minded on the field. He wanted to do it perfectly and never wanted to mess up; he was a perfectionist. He was a huge asset for us, and he was a player that brought other players up with him.”

A GoFundMe page has been created to support Brycen Mabe's family. The fundraiser page shares, “Brycen came bouncing into this world 17 years ago. He has always been a very rambunctious and loving child. His nickname as a toddler quickly became ‘Bam-Bam’ off the Flintstones. As he grew, everyone always said he was going to be a football player. As it turned out, he was extremely athletic and an extremely well-versed Defensive player.”

Please keep the Mabe family in your prayers during this difficult time.
