Person County, NC (June 4, 2024) - According to local news sources, a high-speed chase in Person County led to a two-vehicle collision that left four individuals hospitalized. The incident began shortly after 2:45 p.m. on Monday when a Person County deputy pursued a black Nissan Frontier that had nearly caused an accident while pulling out of a convenience store on US 501. The chase, which spanned less than two miles, ended near the Boston Road intersection.
"I come to my front door, and by that time, I'd seen it come rolling by with the officer behind him and then I heard a big boom, like bang," said Holly Loftis, a resident in the area. "So, I walked out and the truck was rolling and the car had went down in the ditch."
The Nissan Frontier collided with a blue Honda Accord, resulting in significant damage to the driver's side and rear of the Honda. The suspect driving the Frontier was ejected from the vehicle, which ended up on its right side in the grassy median. He sustained serious injuries and was transported to the hospital.
All three occupants of the Honda Accord, including the driver, were taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Both vehicles were towed away from the scene around 3:45 p.m.
An analysis by the ABC11 Data Team revealed that since 2013, at least 50 people in North Carolina have died as a result of police chases, including at least five individuals who were not directly involved in the pursuits. The legality of such chases often depends on the discretion of the law enforcement officers involved, who must weigh the risks of letting a suspect go against the potential dangers of a pursuit.
