Charlotte, NC (October 08, 2025) - According to local news reports, a deadly crash involving a pedestrian shut down the inbound lanes of Wilkinson Boulevard near Ashley Road early Wednesday morning. The incident occurred at approximately 6:13 a.m. in the 3000 block of Wilkinson Boulevard, an area surrounded by heavy commuter traffic, shopping centers, gas stations, and several public bus stops.

The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department confirmed that 28-year-old Travell Shamar Lamont Watts was walking across the road outside of a designated crosswalk when he was struck by a Kia Telluride SUV. Emergency responders found Watts unresponsive at the scene and rushed him to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead. The driver of the SUV remained on the scene and cooperated with law enforcement. The driver sustained minor injuries and was also transported to the hospital for treatment.

Police stated that neither speed nor impairment appeared to be factors for the Kia driver. As is standard in these investigations, the driver was screened for impairment and cleared. Toxicology results for Watts are still pending to determine whether impairment played a role on his part.

Inbound lanes of Wilkinson Boulevard, a major thoroughfare for morning commuters, remained closed for several hours while detectives with the Major Crash Investigation Unit and the Crime Scene Search team processed the scene. All lanes reopened by noon.

Detectives are continuing to investigate the fatal crash. Authorities have urged anyone with information or who may have witnessed the accident to contact Detective D. Leung at 704-432-2169 extension 6. Anonymous tips can also be submitted through the Crime Stoppers P3 Tips Mobile App or website. Officials have confirmed that Watts’ next of kin have been notified.
