Charlotte, NC (July 5, 2025) - According to local news reports, a tragic hit-and-run incident early Saturday morning claimed the life of a 74-year-old pedestrian in northeast Charlotte. The accident occurred around 12:50 a.m. on North Tryon Street near Sugar Creek Road, when a two-car crash ended with one of the vehicles striking the pedestrian on a nearby sidewalk.

Officers from the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department responded to the scene after receiving an Accident with Personal Injury call. Upon arrival, they found the unresponsive pedestrian, later identified as Ace Nathaniel Chambers, lying in the parking and vehicle area (PVA) near 4337 North Tryon Street. He was pronounced dead at the scene by emergency medical personnel.

Nearby, authorities discovered a heavily damaged 2007 Chrysler 300. The driver of this vehicle, 35-year-old Willie Sturdivant, remained on the scene along with two juvenile passengers. After being screened by officers, Sturdivant was determined to be impaired and was subsequently charged with Driving While Impaired. Police indicated that speed does not appear to be a factor for Sturdivant’s vehicle, though his impairment is under review for its role in the crash.

The vehicle responsible for initiating the crash fled the scene before law enforcement arrived. It remains unclear whether speed or intoxication were contributing factors for that driver. Investigators have not publicly confirmed which of the two vehicles directly struck Chambers, though the impact is believed to have occurred as a result of the initial collision between both cars. CMPD emphasized that the crash investigation remains active and ongoing, and further charges may be filed as additional facts emerge.

Detectives from the Major Crash Investigation Unit, in coordination with the DWI Task Force, responded to the crash site to conduct a detailed inquiry. The report related to the incident is registered under case number 20250705-0050-00. Authorities urge anyone with information about the incident to contact Detective Sessoms at 704-432-2169 Ext. 3 or to anonymously report through Crime Stoppers by phone or online.

Family members of Ace Chambers have been notified of his death, and the community is left grappling with the sudden loss of life on what began as a typical early morning.
