Wilkes County, NC (July 26, 2025) - Local news outlets report that a 14-year-old boy has died following a serious crash on US 21 near South Center Church Road in Wilkes County. The collision occurred at approximately 2:35 p.m. on Saturday, July 26, when a northbound 1995 Chevrolet 1500 collided with a 2020 Dodge Ram 3500.

According to the North Carolina State Highway Patrol, the Chevrolet was driven by 18-year-old Samuel Allen Nelson of Traphill. Troopers stated Nelson failed to reduce speed and struck the Dodge Ram, which was also traveling north. A passenger in the Chevrolet, 14-year-old Trenton Ryan Anderson of Traphill, was critically injured. He was flown to Atrium Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem, where he died from his injuries on July 30.

Officials confirmed that Anderson was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash. Nelson was transported to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. The Dodge driver, identified as 63-year-old Calvin Ray Nelson of Pilot Mountain, Virginia, was not injured. However, a passenger in the Dodge sustained minor injuries and was taken to a local hospital.

Authorities emphasized that impairment was not believed to be a contributing factor. Samuel Nelson has been charged with misdemeanor death by vehicle, careless and reckless driving, failure to reduce speed, and failure to secure a juvenile passenger. During the investigation, US 21 was closed for about an hour.

According to Wilkes County Schools, Anderson was a rising eighth-grade student at West Wilkes Middle School. His funeral is scheduled for Friday, August 8. His obituary noted that he enjoyed fishing, riding vehicles, hunting, swimming, horseback riding, attending rodeos and races, and spending time with loved ones.
