Robeson County, NC (August 20, 2025) - Local news reports confirm that a police pursuit from Chadbourn into Robeson County resulted in a serious crash that injured a Chadbourn Police Department officer and a civilian motorist Wednesday evening.
According to Chadbourn Police Chief Ken Elliot, the incident began around 6:30 p.m. when a license plate reader identified a vehicle linked to a wanted person. Officers attempted a traffic stop, but the driver fled, leading authorities on a chase out of U.S. 74 through Evergreen and into Robeson County.
Near the N.C. 72 construction zone, where U.S. 74 narrows to one lane, the fleeing suspect struck another vehicle. The impact created a chain reaction that led to a Chadbourn police officer colliding with the back of a pickup truck. Chief Elliot identified the injured officer as Grady Corder, while other reports listed his name as Grady Coider. Officials later clarified that Corder was hospitalized with serious but non-life-threatening injuries.
The civilian motorist who was struck in the chain reaction was also transported to UNC Health Southeastern in Lumberton. Both Corder and the bystander were released from the hospital, though the officer will require significant follow-up care.
First Sgt. S.B. Lewis with the North Carolina State Highway Patrol reported that both vehicles collided with concrete barriers in the work zone before coming to rest a short distance down the road. Mayor Phillip Britt of Chadbourn added that the suspect’s vehicle also struck the civilian car and made contact with barriers while fleeing through the construction zone.
The suspect fled the scene and remains at large, though authorities recovered the suspect’s vehicle. Law enforcement agencies continue their search, and no updates on the suspect’s identity have been provided.
Chief Elliot stated, “Our prayers are going out to our officer, the other driver, and their families.” Mayor Britt added that both families will remain in the community’s prayers during the recovery process.
