Winston-Salem, NC (October 18, 2026) - Driver Nevaeh Angel Hurdley, 20, and passenger Brianna Dawn McCall, 22, died at the scene of a single-car rollover on southbound U.S. 421 near the Silas Creek Parkway exit in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, police said. Another passenger, Jared Wayne McCall, 24, was taken to a hospital with injuries police described at the time as non-life-threatening.

The crash happened Sunday shortly before 3 p.m. Winston-Salem Police Department officers responded at 2:55 p.m. and found a 2001 Toyota overturned on the right side of the road.

According to the preliminary police investigation, the Toyota was traveling south at a high rate of speed when Hurdley lost control and struck the median guardrail. Police said the vehicle then left the road to the right, struck another guardrail and trees, and rolled over.

All three occupants were ejected, according to police. Investigators said none was wearing a seat belt.

The crash closed southbound U.S. 421 at the I-40 split for several hours. Traffic was diverted onto eastbound I-40, and the ramps from both directions of I-40 to southbound U.S. 421 were closed. Police said the roadway reopened shortly after 8:15 p.m.

The department’s Traffic Enforcement Unit took over the investigation. Police said next of kin for both people who died had been notified. Authorities asked anyone with information about the crash to contact Winston-Salem police.

Legal Questions After a Fatal Single-Car Crash

A passenger's family may have legal options after a fatal crash even when no second vehicle was involved. A wrongful-death claim concerns whether another person's wrongful conduct caused the death. The number of vehicles alone does not answer that question.

In this rollover, police reported high speed and loss of control. Those findings are part of the circumstances an attorney would review, alongside the other evidence. Information about a wrongful-death claim after a car crash can help explain how this type of action works.

Understanding a Family’s Legal Options

A fatal rollover leaves families coping with a sudden loss as well as unanswered questions. Auto accident lawyers can explain whether the circumstances support a possible claim and the role of the deceased person's personal representative or collector in bringing it.
