Trinity, NC (January 18, 2023) - A Lexington man was killed in a tragic accident on Interstate 85 near Finch Farm Road in Randolph County on Wednesday morning. According to information provided by the North Carolina Highway Patrol, at approximately 6 a.m., officers responded to a report of a traffic accident in the Northbound lanes of I-85 near Finch Farm Road in Randolph County.
Isaac Arnaldo Olivas, 29, of Lexington, was operating a 2021 Harley-Davidson motorcycle when, according to law enforcement, he suddenly braked causing the motorcycle to overturn and eject Olivas onto the roadway. A 2017 Freightliner tractor-trailer, operated by Joseph Lee Uphoff, 53, of Concord, traveling the same direction was unable to avoid Olivas in the road and struck him. Olivas was fatally injured and died on the scene of the accident, according to N.C. Highway Patrol representatives.
The driver of the 18-wheeler was uninjured in the incident and is not facing any charges. Troopers are still investigating the incident to determine why Olivas braked suddenly. According to the N.C. Highway Patrol, "The incident is still under investigation as to why Olivas braked suddenly causing him to lose control of the motorcycle."
The northbound lanes of I-85 near Finch Farm Road were reduced to one lane of travel for approximately three hours during the investigation. Troopers cleared the scene at 9:27 a.m.
