Charlotte, NC (February 10, 2023) - According to local news sources, a three-car crash took place in Ballantyne, resulting in the tragic loss of two lives on Friday just before 12:30 pm. The incident occurred near the intersection of Lancaster Highway and Providence Road West, close to Harrison United Methodist Church.
The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department (CMPD) reports that the driver of a 2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee, Mitchell Virgulti, was heading west on Providence Road West when he crossed the center line and collided head-on with a 2012 Ford Econoline van, which was driven by Angel Enrique Lopez-Alvarado. The impact caused a 2009 Hyundai Genesis to hit the rear of the Ford van.
The driver and front passenger of the Hyundai were transported to Atrium Health Providence with minor injuries, but Virgulti and Lopez-Alvarado were both pronounced dead at the scene. Authorities say they believe speed and impairment were factors in the crash for Virgulti, but do not know if those factors also applied for Lopez-Alvarado. Toxicology test results are pending for both of the deceased individuals.
According to the reports, Lopez-Alvarado was wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash, while Virgulti was not. CMPD says that neither speed nor impairment appear to be factors for the driver of the Hyundai.
The road closures caused by the accident lasted for three hours and interfered with the preschool pickup at the Harrison United Methodist Church.
