New Bern, NC (July 29, 2026) - According to local news reports and statements from the North Carolina State Highway Patrol, a two-vehicle collision occurred around 8:53 p.m. at the intersection of Airport Road and Old Cherry Point Road in Craven County.

Troopers reported that Mariana Graybeal Libengood, 23, of New Bern, was traveling west on Old Cherry Point Road in a Kia sedan. Michael Shawn Hoveland, 58, also of New Bern, was traveling east on a Harley-Davidson motorcycle.

According to the Highway Patrol, Libengood attempted to turn left onto Airport Road and did not yield the right of way to the approaching motorcycle. The Kia and motorcycle collided, ejecting Hoveland from the motorcycle. He died at the scene.

Local reports identified Hoveland as the owner of Beartown Bistro & Pizza Company, a restaurant located on US-70 near the crash location. Libengood was charged with failure to yield and misdemeanor death by motor vehicle. The charges are allegations, and she is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
