High Point, NC (May 30, 2024) - According to local news sources, a North Carolina woman has been charged following a serious accident on Interstate 85 Business near Old Thomasville Road that resulted in a tractor-trailer catching fire and the driver suffering severe injuries. On Thursday at 11:25 a.m., troopers with the North Carolina State Highway Patrol responded to a crash involving a Lexus and a tractor-trailer in Randolph County.

Mary Barker of Thomasville was attempting to merge into the right lane when her vehicle collided with the tractor-trailer. The impact caused the truck to veer off the road, strike a bridge abutment for the Old Thomasville Road overpass, overturn, and catch fire. The truck driver, Douglas Eugene Miller, a 61-year-old High Point resident, suffered life-threatening injuries and was airlifted to Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem. Miller is currently in serious but stable condition.

Troopers have charged Barker with unsafe movement and speeding. The driver of the Lexus was not injured in the crash. The accident led to the closure of all southbound lanes of US 29/70 near Old Thomasville Road, though they have since reopened. The crash remains under investigation, and an inspection of the Old Thomasville Road bridge confirmed it is safe for travel.
