Salisbury, NC (May 28, 2024) – According to local news sources, a convicted sex offender, Kenneth Vickers, was killed in a shootout with deputies from the Rowan County Sheriff’s Office. The incident occurred when deputies attempted to serve an arrest warrant at a residence on Old Concord Road.
Kenneth Vickers, 36, had been found guilty on May 24, 2024, of six counts of statutory sex offense and six counts of indecent liberties. He had left the courtroom during a break and did not return, prompting the issuance of an arrest order. Vickers had been out on bond before the incident.
Around 1 p.m. on May 28, deputies from the Rowan County Sheriff’s Office, assisting the Cabarrus County Sheriff’s Office, arrived at a home on Old Concord Road in Salisbury to serve the warrant. Upon arrival, they discovered Vickers hiding in a shed behind the house. Vickers fired a handgun at the deputies, who returned fire, resulting in his death. No deputies were injured in the exchange.
Body camera footage reviewed by investigators confirmed that Vickers initiated the gunfire. “Mr. Vickers can be seen on body camera footage firing a shot, don’t exactly know how many shots, but firing shots at deputies,” said Capt. Mark McDaniel of the Rowan County Sheriff’s Office. “They returned fire, and Mr. Vickers is deceased.”
The North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation is handling the investigation into the officer-involved shooting, a standard procedure when law enforcement personnel are involved in such incidents.
Robert Sells, Vickers’ father-in-law, expressed mixed emotions about the situation. “He said he wasn’t going to jail,” Sells said. “We were expecting something like this.” Sells revealed that his granddaughter was one of Vickers’ victims, causing significant turmoil within the family.
The tragic incident has left the community reflecting on the delicate balance between seeking justice and the violent realities that can sometimes ensue during law enforcement operations.
