Morganton, NC (May 19, 2024) - According to local news sources, a Georgia man was arrested following a road rage incident in Morganton over the weekend. Public Safety officers responded to a call on Sunday afternoon about a man pointing a gun at cars on Interstate 40 near Exit 105.
Officers arrived at the scene and located Michael Jones, from Athens, Georgia, in the parking lot of a nearby Sonic Drive-In. Jones matched the description provided by witnesses and was confirmed to have been involved in a road rage incident that began on Highway 64 and continued on I-40.
During the altercation, Jones allegedly aimed a 9-millimeter handgun at a couple from Marion. William Shrubb, the husband, recounted that Jones tried to pass their car on a two-lane section of the road, nearly hitting their rear bumper before pointing the firearm at them. His wife contacted the highway patrol, and they managed to get the suspect's tag number.
Chief Jason Whisnant advised against engaging with aggressive drivers, emphasizing the dangers posed by individuals carrying weapons. “You don’t want to engage with people like that,” he said. “Many people are carrying weapons these days, and you approach another driver in a heat of passion, and those outcomes are not good.”
The couple followed Jones' car to the Sonic, where police arrested him. A 9-millimeter handgun was found behind some bushes near the restaurant, where families were dining. Jones was charged with two counts of misdemeanor assault by pointing a gun and was given a $5,000 secured bond. He bonded out of jail by Monday afternoon and is scheduled to appear in court next month.
