Currituck County, NC (July 1, 2024) - According to local news sources, a tragic car accident occurred on Route 158 near Shortcut Road, resulting in the death of Larry Edwin Walter, 87, of Virginia Beach. The incident took place around 3 p.m. on July 1 when a small Penske moving SUV, traveling east on Route 158, crossed the center turn lane. The SUV sideswiped a minivan traveling in the opposite direction before colliding head-on with a Dominion Energy service truck.
Walter, a U.S. Navy veteran and long-time employee of Penske, died at the scene. He was a passenger in the Penske SUV, driven by Richard Mayes, 69, also of Virginia Beach. Mayes was transported to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital in critical condition but has shown signs of improvement. He was scheduled to be moved to a normal room as his condition stabilized.
Troopers from the North Carolina Highway Patrol reported that neither speed nor alcohol appeared to be factors in the crash. The investigation is ongoing, and no charges have been filed as of July 5.
Walter had worked with Penske for nearly 22 years, and both he and Mayes were involved in transporting vehicles for the company. All other individuals involved in the accident have been treated and released from medical care.
