Matthews, NC (July 01, 2026) - Information from local reports and Matthews Police states that Jonathan Tyler Hill, 40, of Monroe, died following a nighttime collision on East John Street near McKee Road and I-485. Officers responded at approximately 9:34 p.m. and found Hill with severe injuries. He was pronounced dead at the scene. Hill’s motorcycle passenger was also injured but declined transportation to a hospital.

Investigators reported that Ryan Faulkner, 59, of Stallings, was traveling toward I-485 on East John Street when he attempted to turn left into a gravel driveway. Police said Faulkner failed to yield to Hill’s oncoming motorcycle, which struck the right rear portion of Faulkner’s vehicle. Hill and his passenger were thrown from the motorcycle. Authorities said Hill was then struck by a vehicle driven by Xiukuai Zhang, 46, of Matthews, who allegedly left the scene without stopping.

After the initial impact, the unoccupied motorcycle reportedly struck two additional vehicles traveling behind Faulkner. Most reports described the incident as a four-vehicle collision, while one account described five vehicles as being involved. A driver from one of the vehicles was taken to a hospital with injuries described as non-life-threatening. East John Street remained closed during the investigation and reopened at approximately 1 a.m.

Police said evidence collected at the scene, vehicle data, and Flock camera records helped investigators identify Zhang’s vehicle. Officers reportedly located it at the restaurant where Zhang worked, and investigators said evidence from the vehicle confirmed that it had struck Hill. The Mecklenburg County District Attorney’s Office later determined that probable cause existed to bring charges against two drivers.

The Mecklenburg County Sheriff’s Office arrested Zhang on July 20 and charged him with felony hit-and-run resulting in death. He was later released after posting a $25,000 secured bond. The Union County Sheriff’s Office arrested Faulkner the same day on charges of misdemeanor death by vehicle and failure to yield the right of way. He was released after posting a $3,500 secured bond.
