Smithfield, NC (May 21, 2024) – Local news outlets report that a motorcyclist, John Brinchek III, was injured in a hit-and-run accident on Tuesday night in Smithfield. The collision occurred around 9:13 p.m. in the parking lot of Lowes Home Improvement on North Brightleaf Boulevard, near the entrance to CVS Pharmacy.

According to police, Brinchek was riding a 2006 Kawasaki motorcycle when it collided with the passenger side of a blue or black Ford Explorer SUV. The impact ejected Brinchek onto the pavement, causing injuries to his arm and leg. Despite his injuries, Brinchek declined medical treatment at the scene.

A witness reported that the driver of the Ford Explorer initially slowed down and nearly stopped after the collision, but then suddenly accelerated and left the scene. The vehicle is believed to be a 2004-2005 Ford Explorer Sport Trac and will be missing the right rear rocker panel molding, which fell off at the accident site.
