Lincoln County, NC (March 17, 2023) - Local news reports suggest a tragic accident occurred on Friday, March 17, 2023, when an allegedly impaired driver struck a stopped truck in Lincoln County, resulting in the death of a 4-year-old and injuries to his 8-year-old and 2-year-old siblings.

According to the North Carolina State Highway Patrol, the accident took place at around 1:15 p.m. on Startown Road near Ritchie Road, where a 1994 Toyota truck driven by 63-year-old Jorge Isabel Vivas had stopped to make a turn. Trooper Christopher Casey stated that 40-year-old Lincolnton resident Tracy Michelle Blanton, driving a northbound Mercedes ML 350 SUV, failed to slow down and collided with the stopped truck.

The 4-year-old tragically succumbed to his injuries at the scene. The two other children were rushed to the hospital, with one facing potentially life-threatening injuries and the other suffering non-life-threatening injuries. Kimberly Campbell, Lincoln County EMS Manager, reported that neither Vivas nor Blanton were hurt in the crash, and both refused EMS treatment on site. The children were not restrained in car seats at the time of the accident.

Master Trooper Casey revealed that the initial investigation indicated impairment as a contributing factor in the wreck. Blanton was arrested and charged with felony death by vehicle, driving while impaired, failure to reduce speed, possession of methamphetamine, and multiple vehicle violations. She was held at the Harven A. Crouse Detention Center on a $65,000 bond.

Startown Road was closed for approximately two hours as authorities conducted their on-scene investigation. The tragic accident has left the community in shock and mourning for the young life lost and the injured siblings.

It is essential to practice safe driving habits and remain vigilant on the road, as accidents like these can have devastating consequences for all involved.
