Iredell County, NC (April 19, 2025) - According to local news reports, charges have been upgraded against a Walkertown man following a deadly crash on I-77 South that took the lives of two Mooresville women. The incident occurred at approximately 10:10 p.m. near mile marker 62 when a 2006 Ford F-250, driven by 31-year-old Benjamin Wesley Overton, collided with a 2023 Kia Sportage traveling in the same direction.

Following the impact, both vehicles veered off the right side of the road, striking a guardrail. The collision caused the Kia to overturn, leading to the ejection and immediate death of both its occupants. The victims were identified as 47-year-old Jessica Lyndsay Horton, the driver, and 47-year-old Patricia Marie Osorno, the passenger. Both women were pronounced dead at the scene.

Initially, Overton faced charges including driving while impaired, careless and reckless driving, two counts of felony death by vehicle, and driving while license revoked. However, after continued investigation and a review in consultation with the Iredell County District Attorney’s Office, the North Carolina State Highway Patrol announced on April 30 that Overton’s charges had been elevated to two counts of second-degree murder and two counts of aggravated felony death by vehicle.

Officials cited excessive speed and impairment as key contributing factors in the crash. Reports confirm that Overton, who was not injured in the wreck, had a history of previous offenses. According to the North Carolina Department of Adult Correction, Overton has three prior DWI convictions and has faced charges related to firearm possession, breaking and entering, and theft. These were previously consolidated under a single judgment. He was also found to be in violation of parole, which had been scheduled to end on May 4.

Overton remains incarcerated at the Iredell County Detention Center, where his bond has been increased to \$2.5 million. Authorities closed the affected portion of I-77 for approximately ten hours following the accident to allow for evidence collection and thorough investigation. The case remains open and under review by the North Carolina State Highway Patrol.
