Concord, NC (May 17, 2024) - According to local news sources, an impaired driver has been charged with murder after striking and killing a pedestrian in Concord on Friday afternoon. The tragic accident occurred at 1:27 p.m. on Davidson Highway/NC 73 near Winecoff School Road.

The victim, John Lee Stevenson Jr., 35, of Concord, was walking west on Davidson Highway when he was hit by a Nissan Titan pickup truck. Stevenson was pronounced dead at the scene. Police confirmed that impairment was a significant factor in the collision.

The driver of the pickup truck, David Royce Brown, 41, of Concord, has been charged with habitual impaired driving and second-degree murder. He is currently being held at the Cabarrus County Jail without bond.

Concord Police reported that the incident happened just before 1:30 p.m. on Davidson Highway near Winecoff School Road, east of I-85. Stevenson, who was walking west on the highway, was struck by the Nissan Titan driven by Brown. The authorities emphasized that Brown's impairment played a critical role in the deadly crash.
