Charlotte, NC (July 16, 2026) - According to local reports and information from emergency responders, a multi-vehicle crash blocked the inbound lanes of I-277 on Thursday morning near Fourth Street in Uptown Charlotte.

The collision occurred on the John Belk Freeway just past Exit 2A for Third and Fourth streets. Local reports placed the crash shortly after 8 a.m., with one report listing the time as approximately 8:13 a.m. and another placing it closer to 8:30 a.m.

Crews initially blocked two lanes while responding to the scene. All inbound lanes were later closed, and traffic was diverted through the Third and Fourth Street exit. Most lanes had reopened by approximately 9:30 a.m., and transportation officials later confirmed that the highway was fully open.

The closure caused traffic to back up along the John Belk Freeway, onto the Brookshire Freeway toward I-77, and along inbound Independence Boulevard from Eastway Drive. The backups eased after the lanes reopened.

Mecklenburg EMS Agency personnel transported one person to a hospital for treatment. Emergency officials described the injuries as non-life-threatening. Authorities did not release the injured person’s name or provide additional information about the treatment received.
