Hickory, NC (November 16, 2023) - According to local news sources, a devastating multi-vehicle collision occurred late Thursday night, resulting in the tragic death of a Hickory woman. The catastrophic incident involved three passenger vehicles and a tractor-trailer on NC 16 at Buffalo Shoals Road in Catawba County.
At approximately 11:30 p.m., a 2023 Toyota Corolla, driven by Julia Annice Chandler, 34, of Hickory, ran a red light while traveling north on NC 16. The Corolla collided with a 2011 Honda Accord attempting a left turn from Buffalo Shoals Road onto NC 16, rendering both vehicles immobile in the northbound lanes. Shortly after, a 2010 Honda Civic, also heading north, struck the Accord. The Civic's driver managed to safely move to the road's shoulder.
The situation escalated when a 2001 Peterbilt tractor-trailer, operated by Richard Miles, 71, from Rockwood, Tennessee, hit the disabled vehicles. The collision's impact propelled the tractor-trailer and the Corolla off the road into utility wires, causing an electrical pole to fall and ignite the tractor-trailer. The ensuing fire rapidly spread to the Corolla.
In a heroic response, Miles, along with two passersby, rescued Chandler from her burning vehicle. She was airlifted to Atrium Health Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte with life-threatening injuries but unfortunately succumbed to her injuries on Saturday, November 18.
Christopher David Hernandez, 21, from Newton, the Accord's driver, sustained non-life-threatening injuries and received treatment at Catawba Valley Medical Center. Teresa Elaine Glenn, 61, also from Newton and the driver of the Civic, was unharmed. The tractor-trailer driver escaped the incident without injuries.
The North Carolina State Highway Patrol's preliminary investigation did not suggest impairment as a factor. However, charges are pending, awaiting the conclusion of the ongoing investigation and consultation with the Catawba County District Attorney’s Office. The accident caused significant disruptions, closing the road for around eight hours for power line restoration by utility crews.
