Charlotte, NC (December 7, 2023) - According to local news sources, a tragic accident occurred on December 7, resulting in the death of a Garinger High School student and injuring several others. The accident, which involved a single vehicle, a Mazda 3, happened in the 3200 block of Shamrock Drive at approximately 9:25 a.m.

The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department (CMPD) reported that the Mazda was traveling westbound on Shamrock Drive when it veered off the left side of the road, went airborne, and flipped. The impact of the crash caused extensive damage to the vehicle. Three of the students inside were not wearing seatbelts and were ejected from the car, sustaining serious injuries. The driver, who was wearing a seatbelt, remained inside the vehicle.

Tragically, on December 10, 15-year-old Allisson Mejia succumbed to her injuries. She was among the four students from Garinger High School involved in the crash. The students, identified as a 17-year-old boy, two 16-year-old girls, and Allisson, were taken to Atrium Health Main, where Allisson later passed away.

School officials have extended grief counseling services on the Garinger campus, recognizing the profound impact this incident has had on the student body and the community. The principal, LeDuan Pratt, expressed heartbreak over the loss and urged the school community to support each other during this difficult time.

In the wake of the accident, Shamrock Drive was temporarily closed between Finchley and Glenville. The CMPD continues its investigation into the crash, and anyone with information is encouraged to contact Detective Kupfer at 704-432-2169, Ext. 1.

This incident serves as a solemn reminder of the importance of road safety, particularly the crucial role of seatbelts in protecting vehicle occupants. The Garinger High School community mourns the loss of a young life and the injuries sustained by the other students, and efforts are being made to support those affected by this tragedy.
