Charlotte, NC (June 4, 2024) - Detectives with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department’s Major Crash Investigation Unit are currently investigating a fatal motor vehicle accident in the Central Division.

According to local news sources, the crash occurred on Tuesday, June 4, 2024, at approximately 2:19 a.m., in the 700 block of West John Belk Freeway. Central Division officers responded to a motor vehicle crash call and upon arrival, they found an overturned 2019 Jeep Wrangler and a 2005 Hyundai XG 350L sedan with damage to the driver’s side and rear.

Officers discovered an unresponsive male, Frederick Lachoun Brown, Jr., 26, lying in the roadway next to the Jeep. Immediate CPR was administered by officers, and the Charlotte Fire Department and Medic also arrived at the scene. Brown was transported to Atrium Health Main, where he was pronounced deceased.

The preliminary investigation by the Major Crash Investigation Unit, Homicide Unit, DWI Task Force, Motor Unit, and Crime Scene Search revealed that Brown was driving the Jeep Wrangler northwest on West John Belk Freeway when he struck the Hyundai. Subsequently, he lost control of the Jeep, hit a concrete median, and the vehicle overturned. It was noted that Brown was not wearing a seatbelt, leading to his ejection from the vehicle. Goodness Chizuru Odoemena, the 20-year-old driver of the Hyundai, sustained minor injuries.

CMPD has notified Brown's next of kin. The investigation remains active and ongoing. Authorities encourage anyone who witnessed the crash or has information to contact Detective Sessoms at 704-432-2169, Extension 3, or anonymously through Crime Stoppers at 704-334-1600 or the Crime Stoppers website.

The crash resulted in the closure of the inner loop of Interstate 77 North between Brooklyn Village Drive and Caldwell.
