Sunset Beach, NC (May 25, 2024) – According to local news sources, a severe three-car collision occurred around 1:00 p.m. on Old Georgetown Rd near Clubhouse Dr in Sunset Beach. The accident resulted in four people being hospitalized, with two of them in critical condition, as reported by Sunset Beach Fire Chief Richard Childres.

Traffic was backed up and stalled for hours on Old Georgetown Road on Saturday, May 25, following the collision. The crash caused both lanes to be closed for nearly two hours, during which traffic was redirected to U.S. 17. All vehicles involved were totaled.

A crash report from the North Carolina Department of Public Safety reveals that the collision occurred just outside Calabash and involved four vehicles. The driver of a 2023 Ford truck hauling a trailer with a tractor attached was traveling north on Old Georgetown Road when the driver traveled to the left of center, ran off the road to the left, and then struck a 2022 Volkswagen traveling south head-on. Upon impact, the tractor on the trailer attached to the Ford became detached and also struck the Volkswagen, which then ran off the road to the right and came to rest on the shoulder.

The third vehicle, a 2011 Chrysler, was traveling south on Old Georgetown and moved left of center to avoid the Ford. It was then struck by the Ford’s trailer and came to rest in the road. Following the collision with the Chrysler, the Ford continued traveling north before colliding head-on with a fourth car, a 2008 Cadillac. After impact with the fourth car, the Ford came to rest in the roadway.

The report states that the Ford was traveling around 45 miles per hour (MPH), which is the speed limit, and the Volkswagen was traveling 40 MPH prior to the crash. Both vehicles were traveling 40 MPH upon impact. The Chrysler and Cadillac were both traveling 40 MPH prior to the crash and at 35 MPH and 0 MPH upon impact, respectively.

The Volkswagen contained the driver and two passengers, and all three were transported by Brunswick County EMS to Grand Strand Hospital in Myrtle Beach, S.C. The Chrysler contained only the driver, who was also transported via Brunswick County EMS to Grand Strand Hospital. The Cadillac contained a driver and two passengers, none of whom were transported to a hospital. The driver of the Ford was also not transported to a hospital by EMS.

The condition of those transported to the hospital following the crash is unclear.

The North Carolina State Highway Patrol responded to the crash, with local first responders, including the Sunset Beach Police Department and the Sunset Beach Fire Department, assisting on the scene.

The investigation into the cause of the accident is ongoing, and authorities are urging anyone with information to come forward to assist with the case.
