Nash County, NC (October 31, 2025) - According to local news reports, a 45-minute high-speed chase along I-95 South came to a dramatic and dangerous end when 20-year-old Shaheem Stephenson of Hertford County was taken into custody by North Carolina State Troopers. The incident began after authorities attempted to stop two Chevrolet Camaros allegedly racing through Johnston County. While one driver pulled over, Stephenson accelerated, initiating a pursuit that would span multiple counties and reach speeds up to 140 miles per hour.

The pursuit, which began in Johnston County, continued southbound into Harnett County before ending near Exit 73 in Nash County. During the chase, Stephenson’s vehicle—a Chevy Camaro—was involved in at least two separate crashes. The car struck a dark-colored vehicle, a silver SUV, and a North Carolina Highway Patrol cruiser. One of the crashes forced the dark-colored vehicle off the road into a ditch filled with water, and both the trooper and the driver of that vehicle were transported to a hospital for medical evaluation. A minivan was also struck during the pursuit.

Stephenson's Camaro ultimately blew a tire, prompting him to pull off onto the shoulder near Dunn. From above, aerial footage captured the moment Stephenson exited the vehicle and laid on the ground while troopers approached with weapons drawn. A female passenger who was also in the Camaro was temporarily detained but released without being charged.

In the aftermath, the scene stretched across several miles of I-95, with law enforcement vehicles blocking parts of the access road and officers conducting a detailed investigation. Five vehicles were reported damaged. Traffic was heavily backed up Friday afternoon, particularly at Stoney Run Drive, while officials worked to document the extensive scene.

Stephenson faces a list of charges in both Nash and Harnett counties, including reckless driving, racing, driving with a revoked license, and several others. He was initially held on a $75,000 bond. Records indicate he had previously been cited for speeding, reckless driving, and driving without a license in Bertie County just days earlier on October 25, 2025. Another speeding charge tied to a different vehicle had been issued in Pitt County on October 9, 2025. He is expected to appear in Nash County court on Monday and again in Harnett County in December.

A traveler from Montreal, Canada, was also involved in one of the collisions. Though unharmed, his vehicle was damaged during Stephenson's attempt to evade law enforcement. He noted that this was his first visit to the United States.
