A search for a car-crash lawyer may lead to a law firm’s website, the North Carolina State Bar membership directory, a nonprofit resource, a lawyer referral service, a commercial directory, a matching platform, or a paid lead form. Similar layouts and buttons do not mean those services perform the same function.

A directory lists information, a referral service or matching platform connects people, a lead form sends contact information, and a law firm may offer representation; the labels should not be assumed from the page design.

A law-firm page should identify who is responsible for it

North Carolina Rule of Professional Conduct 7.2 requires a communication about a lawyer’s services to include the name and contact information of at least one responsible lawyer or law firm. Before sending confidential facts, confirm the operator’s legal name, physical or mailing contact information, lawyers involved, jurisdictions, and whether the page is the firm’s own site or a third-party marketing page.

The State Bar membership directory verifies licensing status

The North Carolina State Bar membership directory provides member information and indicates whether a lawyer is active and eligible to practice in North Carolina. It is a verification source, not a promise about case fit, availability, fees, staffing, or outcome.

The State Bar’s public guidance also identifies licensing, disciplinary information, experience, insurance, fee information, communication, and fit as subjects a person can investigate. Keep the name searched, date checked, result, and unresolved question rather than relying on a badge or copied profile.

Referral and matching organizations perform an intermediary function

Rule 7.4 defines an intermediary organization to include a lawyer referral service, advertising cooperative, matching service, online marketing platform, or similar organization that refers consumers or helps create lawyer-client relationships. The consumer should identify the organization, its selection process, participating lawyers, charges, complaint process, information handling, and whether the lawyer pays to participate.

A lead form may send information without making a referral judgment

Rule 7.2 discusses paid lead generation and distinguishes a permissible lead source from a service that creates a misleading impression that it evaluated a person’s legal problem or made an unpaid recommendation. A form labeled “case evaluation,” “connect now,” or “see your options” may route information to one firm, several firms, a call center, or a vendor. Read the operator identity, consent language, privacy notice, communications authorization, and recipient description before submitting.

  • Who owns and operates the site, page, telephone number, chat, and form
  • Whether the listed lawyers paid for placement or participation and how results are ordered
  • Whether information goes to one identified firm, several participants, or another vendor
  • Whether the service verifies a license, screens a subject area, makes a referral, or only transmits a lead
  • What communication method and frequency the consent language authorizes
  • How to withdraw a request and whom to contact about stored information

A consultation is not automatically an engagement

A telephone call, chat, referral, appointment, document upload, or conflict check does not by itself define the scope of representation. Confirm in writing whether a firm accepted the matter, which lawyer and entity are responsible, what work is included or excluded, how fees and expenses are calculated, what the client must do, and how either side communicates a non-engagement or later termination.
