Lumberton, NC (March 28, 2026) - As reported by local authorities, a serious crash involving a passenger vehicle and a commercial truck resulted in one fatality and another person injured along I-95 South near Exit 13 for I-74.

According to investigators, the collision occurred shortly before the early afternoon hours when both a Honda passenger vehicle and a tractor trailer were traveling southbound in the right lane of I-95. Officials stated that the Honda failed to reduce speed and struck the rear of the trailer being pulled by the commercial vehicle.

After the initial impact, the Honda became lodged underneath the trailer in what is commonly described as an underride crash. The driver of the tractor trailer continued moving the vehicle toward the shoulder before realizing the severity of the situation. Upon stopping, the driver observed that both the trailer and the Honda had caught fire.

Emergency crews responded to the scene, where the fire had engulfed both vehicles. By the time the flames were extinguished, both the trailer and the passenger car had sustained extensive burn damage.

Authorities confirmed that the passenger in the Honda, identified as Jesus Prieto of St. Augustine, Florida, was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the Honda, identified as Oscar Cabellero, suffered serious injuries, including burns, and was transported to UNC Chapel Hill for treatment.

The driver of the commercial vehicle was not injured in the crash.

Traffic in the southbound lanes of I-95 was affected for several hours as crews worked to investigate the scene and clear the roadway. Officials indicated that at least one lane remained closed into the evening while the investigation continued. The crash remains under active review by the North Carolina State Highway Patrol.

How Investigations And Claims Typically Move Forward After Serious Crashes

Incidents like this are usually reviewed through multiple layers of investigation involving law enforcement, emergency responders, and insurance representatives. Each group works to document the sequence of events, assess roadway conditions, and gather physical evidence from the scene. These findings often play a key role in determining how responsibility is evaluated and how claims are handled in the weeks that follow.

In many situations, accident claims move through structured administrative processes that include reviewing crash reports, medical records, and vehicle damage assessments. Insurance carriers may also examine timelines closely, especially when injuries require ongoing treatment. These steps help clarify how the incident occurred and how different factors may influence the outcome of a claim.

When a car accident involves a commercial vehicle, additional considerations often come into play, including driver logs, vehicle maintenance records, and company safety practices. A careful review of this type of evidence can help establish how the collision unfolded, and in some cases, individuals may seek insight from resources such as a semi-truck accident lawyer to better understand how these factors are evaluated.
