Millers Creek, NC (July 01, 2026) - Local news reports and statements from the North Carolina State Highway Patrol indicate that a fatal head on collision occurred Wednesday morning on NC-16 North near Elisha Staley Road in the Wilbar community of Wilkes County.

Troopers reported that the crash happened at approximately 7:35 a.m. A 2025 Honda Civic driven by Obaldo “Michael” Basaldua-Acevedo, 21, of Jefferson, was traveling north on NC-16. A 2008 Ford Ranger driven by Martin Harry Halvorsen, 60, of Elkin, was traveling south on the same roadway.
