At around 3:30 p.m., highway patrol troopers rushed to a crash scene on NC 18 near Mountain Valley Road. A 2009 Lincoln MKS, reported to be travelling northbound, unexpectedly veered across the center line and collided head-on with a southbound motorcycle.
The motorcyclists, James Wendell Yarbrough, a 55-year-old Lexington resident, and Katlin Cassidy Flynn, a 32-year-old from Salisbury, were thrown from their 2000 Yamaha motorcycle and didn't survive the incident.
According to Master Trooper Christopher Casey the driver of the Lincoln, Sarah Ann Stikes, 20, of McGrady, was not injured. He added that Stikes was arrested and charged with driving left of center and two counts of misdemeanor death by vehicle. The accident unfolded at approximately 3:20 p.m. at 5045 Sparta Road (N.C. 18 North), just a short distance north of the Mountain Valley Church Road intersection and south of the Mertie Road intersection.
First responders from Mulberry-Fairplains Fire & Rescue and Wilkes Emergency Medical Services also attended the scene, providing crucial support in the aftermath. N.C. 18 North was shut down for nearly two hours due to the accident, causing significant disruptions for local residents.
