Robeson County, NC (May 03, 2025) - According to local news reports, a tragic two-vehicle crash occurred around 6:30 p.m. on Saturday, May 3, along McGirt Road near Juanita Road in the Maxton area of Robeson County. The incident left one woman dead and several others injured.

Investigators with the North Carolina Highway Patrol determined that a 2011 Honda CR-V was traveling west on McGirt Road when it crossed the centerline and collided head-on with a 2020 Chevrolet Impala. The impact killed Ethel Mae Locklear, 68, of Maxton, who was a passenger in the Impala. Locklear was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver of the Honda, identified as Dominique Anthony Chavis, also of Robeson County, sustained serious but non-life-threatening injuries and was transported by Robeson County EMS to UNC Health Southeastern for treatment. Authorities stated that Chavis was restrained at the time of the crash. He was later charged with misdemeanor death by motor vehicle and driving left of center. Due to his injuries, he was not immediately jailed.

Two other individuals in the Impala were also hurt in the crash. They were transported to Scotland Memorial Hospital for medical attention, and both are expected to recover. In the Honda CR-V, Chavis had two passengers who were taken to a hospital in Laurinburg. Their injuries were not considered life-threatening, and all involved were reported to have been wearing seatbelts.

First Sgt. S.B. Lewis and Trooper C.L. Oxendine both confirmed that neither speed nor impairment appear to have contributed to the crash, according to their on-scene findings.

This fatal incident has shaken the Maxton community and underscores the importance of safe driving practices, especially on rural roads with limited visibility and higher risks of head-on collisions.
