Rhodhiss, NC (May 24, 2024) - According to local news sources, a fatal motor vehicle accident occurred on Friday evening in Burke County, claiming one life. The North Carolina State Highway Patrol responded to the scene around 5:00 p.m. on Rhodhiss Road near Brown Circle.

Preliminary investigations revealed that a 2016 Toyota Tacoma, traveling westbound, crossed the center line and collided head-on with an eastbound 1997 Kia Sportage. The driver of the Kia, 42-year-old Lori Jean Ward of Connelly Springs, was pronounced dead at the scene. She was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash. The Tacoma's driver, a 60-year-old man from Valdese, sustained minor injuries and was transported to a local hospital.

Officials closed Rhodhiss Road for about two hours during the on-scene investigation. Authorities confirmed that speed and alcohol were not factors in the collision. Charges are pending upon the completion of the investigation and consultation with the Burke County District Attorney’s Office.
