Perquimans County, NC (January 6, 2024) - According to local news reports, the NC State Highway Patrol is currently investigating a fatal car crash that occurred in Perquimans County. The incident, involving a single vehicle, took place around 12:10 a.m. on Drinking Hole Road, as reported by a passerby.

The incident occurred on Drinking Hole Road, just beyond the Belvidere-Chappell Hill Volunteer Fire Station. Sgt. J. Chappell of the Highway Patrol identified the deceased as 36-year-old Jodi Baumgardner of Ryland Road. Baumgardner was driving a 2015 Chevrolet Camaro westbound when her vehicle veered left of the center line, entered a ditch, and struck a culvert. The impact caused the car to launch back onto the pavement, spinning around and coming to rest facing east. Baumgardner, who was ejected from the vehicle, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The passenger, identified as 48-year-old Richard Casey of U.S. Highway 13, Ahoskie, received immediate medical attention from Perquimans County EMS. He was subsequently airlifted to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital in Norfolk, Virginia, by a Nightingale helicopter crew. A Sentara Health spokesman reported that Casey has since been released from the hospital.

Neither Baumgardner nor Casey were wearing seat belts at the time of the accident. Remarkably, Casey was not thrown from the vehicle despite the severity of the crash. Preliminary investigation suggests the car was traveling at approximately 55 mph, the speed limit for that section of the road. A slight curve near the accident site is being considered, but it is not clear if it was a factor in the crash.

The accident, reported by a passerby at 12:10 a.m., prompted responses from the Belvidere-Chappell Hill Fire Department, the Perquimans County Sheriff’s Office, and Perquimans County EMS. The NC State Highway Patrol continues its investigation into the specific circumstances leading to the crash.

This incident has deeply impacted the local community, raising awareness about the importance of road safety and the potentially devastating consequences of driving conditions. The community, while mourning the loss and expressing condolences, awaits further details from the ongoing investigation. Perquimans County officials are urging drivers to exercise caution and remain vigilant, reiterating the critical need for safety measures such as wearing seat belts.

Authorities are dedicated to understanding the cause of the crash and implementing measures to prevent similar incidents in the future. This incident has deeply impacted the local community, and authorities are ensuring that all necessary steps are taken to understand the cause of the crash and prevent similar tragedies in the future.
