Charlotte, NC (February 10, 2024) - Local news reports and prosecutors’ statements indicate that a fatal crash occurred at about 1:45 a.m. at the intersection of Central Avenue and North Sharon Amity Road in Charlotte. Authorities reported that Dimas Ramirez, 24, was driving a Chevrolet Uplander minivan on Central Avenue with his uncle, Abigail Romero, 39, and another relative as passengers.
According to reports, Ramirez was approaching the intersection at North Sharon Amity Road when the minivan entered the intersection against a red light. A Honda Accord traveling on North Sharon Amity Road struck the rear passenger side of the Chevrolet, causing the minivan to spin and overturn onto its passenger side.
Romero was killed in the crash. Reports differ on whether he died at the scene or was killed instantly, while one source reported that he was ejected from the vehicle. Another relative in the Chevrolet sustained minor injuries. Four people in the Honda Accord were reported to have suffered either minor injuries or no injuries.
Investigators said officers later spoke with Ramirez at the hospital and observed signs of possible impairment, including slurred speech, an odor of alcohol, and red, glassy eyes. Reports state that Ramirez and another relative initially told investigators that Romero had been driving the minivan. DNA testing on the airbags and blood evidence later confirmed that Ramirez was the driver, according to prosecutors.
Medical records reviewed in the investigation showed Ramirez had a blood alcohol concentration of 0.17. Authorities also reported that Ramirez did not have a valid driver’s license and did not have insurance for the minivan.
On Monday, June 29, 2026, Ramirez pleaded guilty in Mecklenburg County to felony death by vehicle, involuntary manslaughter, no operator’s license, operating a vehicle with no insurance, and reckless driving to endanger. Superior Court Judge Donald R. Cureton Jr. sentenced Ramirez to 64 to 89 months in prison after the case was called for trial by the Mecklenburg County District Attorney’s Homicide Team.
How Serious Charlotte Crash Reports Are Reviewed After A Fatal Collision
Crashes like this often raise broader questions about how investigators, insurers, and families review what happened after the first report is complete. In many cases, the official record becomes only one part of a larger process that may include medical documentation, vehicle damage review, witness information, roadway details, and insurance policy language.
In a car accident involving serious injuries or a fatality, evidence gathered near the time of the crash can help clarify vehicle movement, occupant positions, impairment concerns, and other facts that may become important later. Families may also choose to review your auto accident claim with a lawyer when they are trying to understand how those details may affect insurance questions or civil claims.
Insurance review after a collision often depends on the available documentation. Police findings, photographs, crash reconstruction details, medical records, and statements can all influence how a claim is evaluated, especially when multiple vehicles, passengers, and disputed facts are involved.
How Car Accident Claims Move Through The Legal Process
After a serious crash, the legal process usually begins with gathering records and identifying the parties, insurance policies, and factual issues involved. Formal responses from insurers or opposing parties can shape the direction of a claim, including whether the matter moves toward settlement discussions, further investigation, or litigation.
A structured review often includes:
- Police reports and crash investigation materials
- Medical records and injury documentation
- Insurance policy limits and coverage questions
- Statements from drivers, passengers, or witnesses
- Evidence related to fault and damages
North Carolina law can make these reviews especially important because disputes over fault may affect the outcome of a claim. Even small factual disagreements can change how insurers evaluate responsibility, damages, and potential recovery.
