Burke County, NC (June 08, 2025) - According to local news reports, a devastating head-on crash along U.S. Highway 70 in Burke County tragically claimed the life of an 8-year-old girl and critically injured two adult drivers on the evening of Sunday, June 8.

Authorities with the North Carolina State Highway Patrol responded to the scene of the crash near Sundown Road around 6:30 p.m. Investigators say a 2017 Ford F-150 traveling eastbound crossed the centerline and collided head-on with a 2022 Kia Forte heading west. The force of the impact caused the Kia to hit a guardrail and overturn.

The driver of the Kia Forte, 30-year-old Jacob Alan Ferguson of Morganton, suffered critical injuries and was airlifted by medical helicopter to a nearby hospital. An 8-year-old girl riding in the back seat of the Kia was pronounced dead at the scene. She was not identified in the initial reports out of respect for the family’s privacy.

The driver of the Ford F-150 was identified as 43-year-old Benjamin Jacob Willis, also of Morganton. He was transported by EMS to a local hospital in critical condition. According to investigators, impairment is suspected to have played a role in the collision. DUI-related charges against Willis are pending following the completion of the investigation and consultation with the Burke County District Attorney’s Office.

Troopers confirmed the road was closed in the area for approximately three hours while authorities investigated and cleared the crash site.

Officials continue to examine the sequence of events leading to the crash, and further legal action may follow once all findings have been reviewed. The community has been left shaken by the sudden and tragic loss, especially given the young age of the victim and the severe injuries sustained by both drivers.
