Durham, NC (September 01, 2026) - According to local reports and Durham police statements, a man died and a female passenger was injured in an early Tuesday morning crash on Garrett Road near Durham-Chapel Hill Boulevard. Officers with the department’s Traffic and Crash Team responded to the 4000 block of Garrett Road at approximately 1:58 a.m.

Investigators said a 2014 Nissan Altima was traveling north on Garrett Road when it passed the intersection at Lansbury Drive and partially left the roadway to the right. The vehicle traveled through a ditch and struck a raised driveway. It then crossed the driveway, ran over a fence and collided with a parked vehicle.

Police said the driver was not wearing a seat belt and was thrown into the back seat. He was pronounced dead at the scene. The female passenger was wearing a seat belt and was transported to a local hospital with injuries described as not life-threatening.

A news crew observed a white car in a residential front yard with extensive front-end damage and deployed airbags. Aerial coverage around 7:30 to 7:40 a.m. showed the crash scene, including what appeared to be an uncovered body beside one of the vehicles. Investigators remained at the location, and crime scene tape was still in place at approximately 7:45 a.m.

Officers blocked a substantial portion of the intersection at Lansbury Drive while examining the scene. One report also spelled the street name as Landsbury Drive. The supplied reports did not identify either occupant or explain why the Altima initially left the road.

The Durham Police Department’s investigation remained ongoing. Police identified Investigator T. Fitting as the contact for information about the crash at (919) 560-4935, extension 29409.

How Durham Car Accident Investigations Inform Insurance Reviews

After a fatal collision, the questions facing those affected often extend beyond the initial police response. Investigation updates, insurance correspondence and records of injuries or property damage can become part of separate reviews. Each process addresses different questions, so an early account of the crash may leave issues unresolved.

In a car accident investigation, additional witness statements, photographs or vehicle examinations may help explain the sequence of events. A car accident injury claim lawyer explains how evidence, documented losses and insurance coverage can affect the evaluation of a claim.

A reconstruction may help establish a vehicle’s path and the order of impacts, while insurance documents address the coverage potentially available. Keeping these questions distinct helps explain why a detailed account of the collision does not, by itself, resolve every financial or legal issue.

How Evidence Helps Resolve Questions About Responsibility

Accountability reviews depend on both the accuracy of individual records and how those records fit together. Photographs may establish where damage occurred, while witness accounts may describe movements before impact. In car accident cases, comparing these sources can help distinguish an observed fact from an assumption about what caused the crash.

When accounts differ or information remains incomplete, a review may examine:

  • The consistency of witness descriptions with physical evidence.
  • The sequence of impacts shown by vehicle and property damage.
  • Updates or corrections to the initial crash report.
  • Records connecting claimed expenses and lost income to the collision.

Why Unanswered Questions Can Affect Claim Resolution

A claim review may take additional time when the available evidence does not explain an important part of the event. A disagreement about how a collision occurred presents a different issue from a disagreement about the extent of someone’s losses. Identifying the specific point in dispute helps explain what additional information may be relevant.

Careful documentation also supports later discussions by preserving the basis for each position. The seriousness of an accident does not establish every element of a claim, and an unresolved question does not establish that a particular person was responsible. Conclusions need to remain tied to the evidence available.
