Broadway, NC (May 21, 2026) - Local reports and statements from the North Carolina State Highway Patrol indicate that a four-vehicle crash on U.S. 421 in Harnett County left one driver dead and sent others to hospitals Thursday evening.

Troopers reported that the crash occurred near McNeill Mill Road, also identified as State Road 1228, near Broadway. Some reports placed the crash time at about 7:31 p.m., while another report listed the time as approximately 7:49 p.m. The crash was also reported near the intersection of U.S. 421 and Sandy Ridge Drive in the Broadway Seminole area.

According to investigators, a 2006 Volkswagen was traveling south on U.S. 421 when it approached a 2012 Nissan passenger car that had stopped in the travel lane while waiting to turn left onto Sandy Ridge Drive. Troopers said the Volkswagen driver failed to reduce speed, moved left of center, and struck the rear of the Nissan. The Volkswagen then collided head on with a northbound 1995 Toyota pickup truck.

After the collision involving the Volkswagen and Toyota, investigators said a 2011 Hyundai passenger car struck the rear of the Toyota. Emergency crews found four vehicles involved, with some vehicles in the roadway and others off the road. Local responders, Harnett County EMS, and law enforcement assisted at the scene.

Authorities identified the Volkswagen driver as Bryson Clay Dement. He was restrained and was taken to a nearby hospital with injuries that were not considered life threatening. Troopers said charges were pending against Dement for misdemeanor death by vehicle.

The driver of the Toyota pickup truck was identified as Zeferino Vazquez Fernandez. Officials said he was transported toward WakeMed Hospital in Raleigh but died while en route. The Nissan driver was not transported by EMS and was cited for driving with a revoked license. The Hyundai driver was also taken by EMS to Central Carolina Hospital in Sanford with injuries that were not considered life threatening.
