Charlotte, NC (April 17, 2026) - As per local news reporting and statements from state authorities, a deadly multi vehicle crash occurred Friday night in Caldwell County along U-S-64 near Union Baptist Road, resulting in the deaths of a 78 year old driver and an 11 year old child.
According to investigators, the incident began around 8:46 p.m. when a 2018 Ford F-150 traveling east crossed the centerline and struck a 2006 Honda Civic head on. The impact caused the pickup to leave the roadway, where it hit a guardrail and a utility pole. The driver of the pickup then fled the scene on foot, leaving the damaged Honda positioned sideways in the road.
Shortly after the initial crash, a second pickup truck, identified as a 2015 Ford F-250 traveling westbound, collided with the disabled Honda in the roadway. Emergency responders arrived and located the Honda’s driver, Pink Grant Lackey, 78, of Lenoir, along with an 11 year old front seat passenger. Both individuals were pronounced dead at the scene.
Authorities later located the driver of the first pickup, identified as 20 year old Matthew Braden Frye of Hickory, in nearby woods. He was taken into custody and was not reported injured. The driver of the second truck was also not injured in the crash.
Investigators determined that speed and impairment contributed to the initial collision. Frye now faces multiple charges, including two counts of felony death by motor vehicle, driving while impaired, driving after consuming alcohol under the age of 21, and improper passing. Officials indicated that additional charges may follow as the investigation continues.
The roadway remained closed for several hours while crews conducted an on scene investigation and cleared the wreckage.
Understanding The Investigation Process After A Serious Collision
In situations like this, the events at the scene are only the beginning of a much longer review process. After emergency crews leave, investigators continue gathering details such as vehicle positions, roadway conditions, and witness statements to better understand how the collision unfolded. These steps help clarify what factors contributed and how responsibility may be determined.
In many cases, incidents involving multiple vehicles require additional analysis, including inspection of damage patterns and timing between impacts. When a car accident involves impairment or multiple points of contact, reports often include both physical evidence and toxicology findings to build a complete picture of the sequence of events.
Documentation gathered early can also play a role in how claims are reviewed later. In a car accident, records like crash reports, medical evaluations, and repair estimates can influence how an injury claim is evaluated, especially for those who may later find a car accident attorney while sorting through next steps.
Steps People Often Face After A Charlotte Area Collision
After everything surrounding a crash has been reviewed, many individuals begin focusing on practical next steps such as managing medical care, handling insurance communication, and understanding available options. These processes can take time, especially when investigations remain active or when multiple parties are involved.
In Charlotte and surrounding areas, it is common for families to review official reports, gather medical records, and keep track of expenses related to recovery. Taking a steady and organized approach can help reduce confusion while decisions are being made about insurance claims or further actions.
