Transylvania County, NC (February 10, 2026) - Reports from local authorities and news sources indicate that a fatal workplace accident occurred Tuesday afternoon at the Transylvania County Landfill expansion site in Brevard.

According to information released by the Transylvania County Sheriff’s Office, the incident was reported between approximately 3:30 p.m. and 3:45 p.m. on February 10. Officials responded to the Phase 7 expansion area of the Woodruff Landfill, located at 500 Howell Road with access from Howell Road off Old Toxaway Road and U.S. 64.

Authorities identified the victim as Dearrius Weston, 21, of Arkansas. Investigators stated that Weston was a contract worker involved in the final stages of the landfill’s lateral expansion project, which covers approximately six acres at the existing county landfill site.

Preliminary findings indicate that Weston was operating a soil compactor machine when the equipment rolled over, pinning him to the ground. Emergency personnel freed Weston and immediately began life-saving efforts. Despite those measures, he was pronounced deceased at the scene. He was later transported to Transylvania Regional Hospital. No other injuries were reported.

Sheriff Chuck Owenby described the incident as a tragic accident and confirmed that the matter remains under active investigation.
