Charlotte, NC (October 15, 2024) – According to local news reports, a tragic accident occurred on Tuesday afternoon, October 15, 2024, on East W.T. Harris Boulevard near The Plaza in Charlotte. A 25-year-old driver, identified as De’Ontrey Taylor, was reportedly impaired at the time of the crash that claimed the lives of two people.
At approximately 2 p.m., Taylor was driving a Hyundai Sonata at a high rate of speed northbound on East W.T. Harris Boulevard. The Sonata collided with a Toyota Camry, which was attempting to make a left turn. The impact was so severe that both vehicles were forced off the roadway and came to rest in a grassy area nearby. The Toyota sustained significant right-side damage, while the Hyundai had heavy front-end damage.
The victims in the Toyota were identified as 47-year-old Aneesah Akbar and 74-year-old Darlene Akbar. Both women were transported to a local hospital but, tragically, were pronounced dead shortly after their arrival. The driver, Taylor, also sustained non-life-threatening injuries and was transported to the hospital for treatment. While there, police officers from the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department (CMPD) screened him for impairment, determining that he was indeed impaired.
After being released from the hospital, Taylor was arrested and charged with two counts of felony death by vehicle, reckless driving, and driving without a valid license. Taylor is currently in the custody of the Mecklenburg County Sheriff’s Office.
The crash remains under investigation by CMPD’s Major Crash Investigation Unit.
