Cove City, NC (July 01, 2026) - Local reports indicate that a fatal crash occurred late Wednesday morning on NC-55 near Dover Road in Craven County. The North Carolina State Highway Patrol responded to the scene at approximately 11:24 a.m. after a collision involving a passenger car and a dump truck.
According to reported findings from investigators, 30-year-old Daejahnae Natalya Smith of Cove City was traveling west on NC-55 in a 2018 Chevrolet Cruze. Reports state that the vehicle crossed the centerline and collided head-on with an eastbound 2006 Peterbilt dump truck.
After the impact, both vehicles came to rest off the roadway. Smith was pronounced dead at the scene by the Craven County Medical Examiner. The dump truck driver, identified as 56-year-old Tracy Bishop Simpson of Maysville, was evaluated at the scene and released.
The Highway Patrol continued its investigation into the crash. No additional details about contributing factors, charges, or other injuries were included in the initial reports.
What Crash Reviews May Examine After A Fatal Truck Collision
Serious vehicle accidents often involve several layers of review after the initial emergency response. In crashes involving a commercial vehicle or heavy truck, investigators may examine roadway conditions, vehicle positions, driver statements, physical evidence, and any available witness accounts before reaching final conclusions.
Insurance companies may also conduct their own reviews after a fatal collision. These reviews can include damage assessments, medical examiner findings, police reports, and questions about how the crash occurred. In North Carolina, contributory negligence rules can affect how claims are evaluated, which makes accurate documentation especially important.
When a crash involves a dump truck, the size and weight of the vehicle can add complexity to the review process. Families and others affected by the incident may need time to understand what official reports say, what information remains pending, and how insurance issues may move forward after the investigation develops.
