Greensboro, NC (May 02, 2025) - According to local news reports, a tragic crash on U.S. 29 in Greensboro claimed the life of a man and left his fiancée with life-threatening injuries early Friday morning. The couple had pulled over to the side of the highway near South Holden Road around 12:31 a.m. to change a flat tire on their 2007 Jeep Grand Cherokee. The vehicle's hazard lights were activated when a 2022 Honda Accord, driven by 25-year-old Robert Lynn Faison Jr., veered off the road and struck both the vehicle and the couple.
The deceased was identified as Christopher Hammonds, who died at the scene. His fiancée, Lisa, sustained multiple severe injuries, including collapsed lungs, broken bones, and internal trauma. She was transported to a nearby hospital in critical condition. Court documents confirm that Lisa had recently recovered from stage 3 breast cancer before this devastating crash.
Faison, a Health Science Education teacher at Dudley High School in Greensboro, was also injured but sustained only minor wounds. Authorities say he was impaired at the time of the crash. Faison has been charged with driving while impaired (DWI), failure to maintain lane control, failure to reduce speed to avoid a collision, felony serious injury by vehicle, and felony death by vehicle. He was taken into custody, later appeared in court on May 5, and has since posted bond. Following the incident, Faison was suspended by Guilford County Schools on May 2.
The Greensboro Police Department’s Crash Reconstruction Unit responded to the scene and is leading the ongoing investigation. Emergency personnel, including Greensboro Fire and Guilford County EMS, were also dispatched in response to the emergency.
The crash has not only shaken the local community but also left Hammonds' children, siblings, and other loved ones mourning an irreplaceable loss. Hammonds was remembered by family as a vibrant, joyful figure who "lit up every room he was in." Multiple GoFundMe pages have been established—one to support his children and another to help Lisa as she recovers.
This incident is a stark reminder of the dangers posed by impaired driving and the tragic consequences that can result. Community members are left grappling with a heartbreaking loss and the difficult recovery ahead for Lisa and Hammonds' family.
