Nashville, NC (May 27, 2024) - According to local news sources, a tragic accident occurred in Nash County during a storm on Monday afternoon. A mother and her three children were involved in a serious crash, resulting in significant injuries to all passengers. The incident took place before 4 p.m. along N.C. 97 near Old Bailey Highway, approximately half a mile west of Interstate 95.

Trooper K.M. Shumate of the North Carolina State Highway Patrol reported that Dysheka Anstead, 27, from Rocky Mount, was driving a 2008 white Infiniti G37 when the accident happened. Due to the stormy weather, Anstead lost visibility and control of the vehicle, causing it to veer off the road to the right. The car struck a ditch, a utility pole, and finally a tree.

The crash resulted in the ejection of a 6-year-old child from the vehicle. Two other children, aged 1 and 7, were also injured. Shumate noted that none of the children were properly restrained in booster seats, as required. Anstead was cited for multiple violations, including failing to properly restrain the children, exceeding a safe speed for the conditions, failing to maintain lane control, and driving with a suspended license.

All four occupants were transported to WakeMed in Raleigh for treatment of serious injuries. Fortunately, all are expected to recover. The crash also led to downed power lines and the temporary closure of N.C. 97 for up to two hours.
