Statesville, NC (May 22, 2024) – According to local news sources, a man was taken into custody after a road rage incident escalated into a police standoff in Statesville, NC. Shortly after 2:30 p.m., police responded to a shots fired call near MLK Jr. Park and Lakewood Drive. A woman, accompanied by her juvenile daughter, was involved in a road rage encounter where a male suspect followed her to the National Guard Armory. She called 911 as the suspect followed her into the parking lot.

The suspect, identified as 49-year-old Clifton Lamont Wellman of Statesville, exited his vehicle, drew a gun, and fired several rounds towards the woman’s car. One round struck the vehicle, but neither the woman nor her daughter were injured. Wellman fled the scene, but officers quickly located his vehicle parked beside a home on Fieldstone Circle. Wellman refused to come out when officers arrived, prompting them to secure a perimeter around the home.

Nearly 15 officers, including Wellman’s mother on a police bullhorn, attempted to coax him out. Around 5:30 p.m., Wellman exited the house and was taken into custody without incident. He was transported to Iredell Memorial Hospital for a medical evaluation before being officially arrested. Wellman now faces multiple charges, including felony discharge of a weapon into occupied property, misdemeanor discharge of a firearm in city limits, and misdemeanor assault with a deadly weapon. He is being held without bond at the Iredell County Detention Center. The investigation remains active.
